Experience and education

Don acts as a key member of the firm’s national leadership team and is responsible for the development and execution related to the wealth business unit strategy, goals and growth plans, including driving the firm’s strategic initiatives across wealth offices. In his role, he works with the leadership team to execute annual planning processes and establish business goals with key measurements to assess the firm’s progress and success. He also partners and collaborates with key stakeholders across the firm to develop a clear understanding of business priorities, provide mentoring, creating alignment and unifying efforts to effect change and progress. He oversees the firm’s Wealth Resource Group, which delivers solutions across tax, specialty tax, ultra-high-net-worth insurance and trust businesses.

Prior to joining Mariner, Don was managing director at Baird, where he led the integration of Hefren-Tillotson into the firm. He focused on operational execution, associate training and development, systems and data migration, marketing and branding strategy, community engagement and the rollout of new financial planning and advisory capabilities. Previously, Don served as president of Hefren-Tillotson, driving cross-functional transformation across asset management, compliance, trading, operations, client support, technology and human resources. He also provided board- and executive-level leadership to improve efficiency and build a more agile organization. Earlier in his career, as chief investment officer at Hefren-Tillotson, he helped transform the firm from a brokerage model to advisory solutions, while leading strategic planning and overseeing research, reporting and trading teams within asset management.

Don holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus in economics from Allegheny College. He also has an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business.

Personal interests

Away from the office, Don enjoys fly fishing, golf, playing the guitar and various outdoor activities. He is a current board member of Real Champions, Inc., a member of the CFA Institute and CFA Society of South Carolina. He was previously a board member of The Blessing Board, Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation, Pittsburgh Urban Christian School and formerly an Honorary Chair of the Fifth Annual CEO Soak, Alzheimer’s Association Executive Leadership Committee and Board of Visitors member for Allegheny College.
