Having A Proper Plan Before A Health Scare
Have you ever been involved in a health scare? It could’ve been a friend, or a loved one, or even yourself. Do you remember what it was like? Perhaps how concerned you were for their health? You and other start asking questions. What if he or she doesn’t pull through? Are they receiving the right care? What might need to change if they do pull through? What are their wishes? Are their wishes documented, and will they be respected? Where are these documents? Who’s legally in charge, and who’s really in charge?
If he or she survives the episode, why do we need to wait until we have an emergency to plan? We all know as people that we are likely to go through this experience. And yet, most of us would rather not talk about it, and therefore might not receive the treatment that we desire. And it leaves loved ones without direction. And in turn, that might lead to unnecessary arguments, especially when we’re in such an emotional state.
Frankly, even those that have done estate planning may not have provided their true wishes and concerns to their loved ones. They haven’t articulated what’s inside of those documents and other issues those documents may not cover. It really comes down to having the proper planning and the proper conversations. At Mariner, we understand the stress these predicaments can cause and the consequences of not having a plan that’s communicated effectively and early.
